Ok, the summer has ended, and the school year is back in gear (at least, the school year at USC is), so that means it is also time to end the summer hiatus.

With the start of a new year, we also have some fresh blood in the form of the first year students. If we're lucky that means, on occaision, someone other than me will be posting here. I'll be creating accounts for any of them who want one later today, and I will also start pestering them to contribute.

I hope everyone had a good summer, and I'll be back to posting philosophy stuff later this very day.

Rather than make another promise of content, I'll just say that the blog, (or at least my contributions) is on summer break, though there may be occaisional posts. Check back in the fall though, when regular posting will resume.

I changed up how the layout looks. Suggestions/notes on the change welcome in the comments.

The AHRC Research Centre started a weblog recently, so I've added a link to it in the blogroll.

I've also reorganized the blogroll a bit. Apart from a bit of category refining, I also added a new category, "Highly Pracitcal Blogs", because I wanted to draw more attention to and have a prominent reminder of Tina Huggins's Conference and CFP blog. The site is a great idea, and it's just in everyone's best interest (conference organizers, applicants, and attendees) to have a site with comprehensive conference information. Hopefully, a site like this can take some of the sting out of publicizing one's own conferences. Hunting down addresses (or purchasing them), mailing out calls to a bunch of departments, and the like is not a fun process, and a site like this is a much more efficient way to get information out there, as well as making it easier for interested parties to find it. Also the more it gets used, the more useful it will be.

Speaking of conferences, tomorrow begins the First Annual USC/UCLA Graduate conference. The program includes papers on a broad range of philosophical topics, John Perry is giving the keynote presentation, and I am pretty excited for the conference. If you are in the area, we encourage you to come by and check it out.

In an effort to cut back on the clutter in the side bar, I've set the blog to only display under "authors" those people who have previously posted. As new authors post, their names will be re-added.

For USC People with accounts: Your accounts still exist, and you can still post, the only change is that your name won't be listed under "author" until you have posted.

For USC People without accounts: If I haven't set up an account for you, drop me an e-mail and I'll get on it.

For non-USC people: The sidebar will have less clutter, and reflect which people have already authored posts on the site, instead of the whole set of people who are currently able to author posts.

This post is here to request that people let me know about blogs in philosophy (or closely related fields) that they think would be good to read regularly and add to the blogroll.

I just opened the page for the first time in I.E. and noticed that the content for the righthand sidebar leaks out into the main entry area.

I'll figure out how to fix that soon, but, really, the best solution would be for people to view the site in a standards compliant browser, so that the site looks the way the HTML and CSS tell it to.

I recommend Firefox.

Also, use the comments on this entry to report any other layout bugs or problems. I use Safari on OSX most of the time, so there's a fair chance there are more problems that I don't know about.

The comments are now functional. You can either leave comments as a guest, or you can register for a commenting account.

Note for USC folks: commenting accounts are a separate thing from blog-author accounts. You need to set up a separate commenting account (it can have the same name) before you can log in for comments.

I am going to also mention here a note of gratitude towards Christopher Lansdown of powerblogs.com who is efficient and helpful when it comes to any problems I encounter with the blog.

Comments seem not to be functional right now, but with some luck they will be operational soon.

We'll keep you updated when the status changes.

This is the first post of the (at present unofficial) USC Graduate student philosophy blog.

The blog is still being set up, but as we're as we get everything configured and settling ourselves in, feel free to take a look around. Hopefully there will be plenty of content in no time.

Welcome.
